DIY “Thieves” Foaming Hand Soap

Foaming Thieves hand soap smells wonderful, cleans your hands well, and helps kill germs (okay, any soap will do that but Thieves SMELLS so good!). It is also kind of spendy! Even the refills make me cringe so I thought making a DIY version was worth a shot. I reused the Thieves foaming soap bottles and it worked well.

My older son loves the smell of Thieves soap too, and since he has moved into his apartment in another state is in need of some good hand soap.

I was able to order some nice foaming soap bottles from Amazon, and had YL Thieves oil and liquid hand soap. The soap I used is the big jug of moisturizing hand soap with aloe from Sam’s, but you just need about an ounce per bottle. I do not recommend the antibacterial soaps with triclosan added.

A bit about Thieves blend…I like Young Living’s Thieves best of all the ones I have tried. I do NOT think Young Living has the ONLY pure, safe, effective essential oils and I freely use oils from other companies, but this particular blend just smells better to me than any other I have tried. When purchasing oils, do your research and be sure you trust the company as to the purity of the oils.

If you wanted any other essential oil scent you can substitute pretty much any oil you like. Lavender is always nice, and I love grapefruit scented soap too.

Here’s what you need to make “Bootleg” Thieves Hand Soap:

Foaming soap bottle

Liquid hand soap, ideally moisturizing

Thieves oil (or whatever floats your boat)

Distilled water

Glass measuring cup

Measuring spoon (tablespoon)

Whisk or fork

Foaming Soap refill supplies
Materials for making DIY Thieves Foaming Soap

Measure about 2 Tablespoons of the liquid soap into the cup.

Add 15 drops of Thieves essential oil to the soap and mix with the fork or whisk.

Add about 4 ounces of distilled water and mix well.

Pour your mix into the soap bottle.

Add another 4 ounces or so of water and swirl to mix.

Add a couple more ounces of water to total about 10 ounces. You need to leave plenty of headroom to allow for the foam pump. I was making these to send to New Mexico so left a bit more headroom to allow for altitude changes. This was less successful than I had hoped, but at least the box smelled good when my son opened it.

Close tightly and swirl gently to mix; way back in Chemistry lab we were taught to “invert and swirl”.

If you have a label maker you can put one on. Chalkboard style labels would be really cute but I didn’t have any of those.

Here are the three bottles all ready to ship west…I bagged them in a sealed Ziploc but apparently they still leaked.

Well, that’s my little tutorial. I hope you find it helpful!

Coop Home Goods Pillow Review

Pillows.

Everybody needs one for a good night’s sleep…and a neck that isn’t stiff and sore in the morning.

It was time to get a new pillow for my husband.   We considered a My Pillow (you know, you’ve seen those ads on TV) and I was just about to order one on Amazon…but while I was looking another pillow came up as an alternative and it has 15,284 reviews with an average of 4.3 stars.  That’s rather impressive.

The pillow in question is the Coop Home Goods – PREMIUM Adjustable Loft – Shredded Hypoallergenic Certipur Memory Foam Pillow with washable removable cover – 20 x 30 – Queen size.   It’s $59.99 and has a 100-day money back guarantee.   So we thought why not give it a whirl?  I ordered it and it arrived at my door two days later.  Thank you Amazon Prime!

This pillow is made in the USA with brand new memory foam.  The pillowcase is breathable to help keep you cool.  In addition to the 100 day trial period, it has a five-year warranty.

Some of the reviews did mention a chemical smell from the memory foam when the pillow is brand new, and yes, there is a smell.  Don’t go sleeping on it without running it through the dryer with a dryer sheet a couple of times to help the smell dissipate (as mentioned in the instructions that come with the pillow).

You can also adjust the fullness of the pillow by adding foam (they include a bag to add if you want) or removing foam if you want it softer/flatter.  The pillow cover is very nice.  It is a thick, quilted cover with a zipper.  And it’s luxuriously soft, made of bamboo-derived rayon.  This outer cover is washable, and there is an inner stretch liner to hold the shredded foam.  There is a nice little video on Amazon that shows you how to customize your pillow to your specific needs.  How cool is that?

So how does my husband like his new pillow?  After running it through the dryer on two 20-minute cycles on low heat with dryer sheets he tried the pillow out.  And slept like a LOG.  Except for when our Ring doorbell’s motion alert went off at 2:00 am that night…bugs set it off.

Every night since then he has gone to sleep quickly and slept all night long.  Last night some bugs set off the Ring again and I woke up, but he never budged.  So that’s how I know this is an amazing pillow and I am so glad we got it for him.

Our son at college has been having trouble sleeping as well and we got him a pillow to try.  I will update this to let you know what his experience is.  I am considering one for myself too.  Nifty pillows for everyone!!!  And oh my, I just noticed they have a knee pillow too…this might be my new favorite company.

Here are some pictures of what you will see when you get a Coop Pillow delivered to you.

Coop Home Goods pillow box

It comes in a box that certainly doesn’t look like a pillow would fit inside…

When you open it you see a bag of shredded foam.

Then you find the actual pillow tightly compressed in a plastic bag.

Carefully open the plastic…

And the pillow starts to inflate.

The directions tell you to put it in the dryer for 10 minutes with 2 dryer sheets to help it inflate and dissipate the smell.  I did twenty minutes on low heat.

Then you can stuff it into your favorite pillowcase—this may be a challenge because it puffs up a LOT.

Backyard Birdbath Deicer

Birdbath deicer House of IngramsDo you enjoy watching birds in your yard?  One of the very best things you can have is a birdbath.  Water is vital for birds all year round.  What do you do when it’s freezing outside?  You could bundle up every hour or two and run outside with some hot water in a kettle and pour it into your birdbath…or you could get a deicer for your birdbath and stay cozy indoors.

This post contains affiliate links.  See my full disclosure here.

Here’s my birthday present this year!  We have a birdbath in our backyard and with our temperatures going and staying below freezing so much, we really need a heater to keep the water liquid for them.  Birds don’t get in the water and splash around when it’s super cold, but they always need water to drink.  It’s especially important around here this year, where we are in a full-on drought.

The K & H Pet Products Ice Eliminator Original Birdbath Deicer

My husband found this on Amazon and I think it’s pretty well designed.  A few years ago we had a different heater and it had lots of ridges that made it very difficult to clean.  This is smooth, and you can even sand it and spray paint it to match your bird bath.  I elected to leave mine natural, as our bird bath is light colored.  And I’m lazy.

It has a thermostat so it doesn’t run when the temperature is above freezing and has a 3 year from purchase warranty.  That’s really good since birdbath heaters in my experience only last a season or two.  It uses just 50 watts of power so it’s energy efficient.  It has a short 18-inch cord so you will need to get a good outdoor extension cord and plug into an outdoor outlet, ideally one that is GFI just to be extra safe.  You should probably also wrap your connection with some electrical tape or use a weatherproofing connection.

So far our temps have gone down to the low 20s and there was a ring of ice around the edge of the bath but liquid water in the center.  The result, happy birds this morning.  Happy me, because I don’t have to run out and refill with warm water.   This is a win-win!

I will update this product review as needed.  So far, I am really happy with this deicer.
